Course Description

This course will provide a broad overview of the child development theories of experts such as Piaget, Freud, Erikson, etc., with a focus on the physical, social, emotional and cognitive aspects of development. The aim of the course is to help parents, teachers, care-givers to understand the developmental process of childhood and be better able to help the child to develop and learn at an appropriate pace.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Child Development

It is important to understand that development in children is a sequential process and that it should be measured by milestones and achievements and not necessarily by time. The basic principles of human growth and development are presented.

Lesson 2: Lesson 2. Physical development

This lesson outlines the process of physical development in the child and some activities to promote physical development.

Lesson 3: Lesson 3. Motor Development

This lessons outlines the process and stages of motor development.

Lesson 4: Cognitive Development

This lesson describes Piaget's Theory of intellectual development and looks at how parents and teachers can contribute to the intellectual development of children.

Lesson 5: Social Development.

This lessons looks at the theories of Erik Erikson and Sigmund Freud and the process of social development.

Lesson 6: Emotional Development

Emotional development is harder to observe and measure. This lesson presents some requirements for emotional development and milestones.

Lesson 7: Moving into adolescence

The transition from childhood to adolescence is an important phase of development. This lesson gives some information about this transition.

Lesson 8: The Whole Child

A summary of the course information and some suggestions for parents/care-givers to help with planning activities for children. Additionally, it is important to understand the factors that affect child development.
